The garden also houses monuments of historical, artistic and archaeological importance. The Botanical Garden has an important research institute, declared a member of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve (RBMA), which develops a wide range of botanical studies in Brazil.

On this guided tour of the sprawling UNESCO biosphere reserve, amble down the Avenue of the Royal Palms, and also through trees and plants from around the world, including the gigantic water lilies from the Amazon.
